The kitchen makeover is complete! It went surprisingly smoothly, and I am thrilled with the results. From orange wood to fresh white and pale oak. We completely gutted the kitchen back to the studs in some parts. The young man who worked for the transport company who moved us into the cottage mentioned that he would love to have all the wood in the kitchen if we ever renovated so, when they time came, I phoned him and he came and took it all. What a relief to not have all those demolition materials to have to eliminate.
I was the project manager and believe me, there is a lot more to managing a project like this than you would think. I had to get the timing of all the trades fine-tuned or there would be delays. Plus making sure that all the materials were delivered on time. There are a lot more details than you initially think that have to be taken care of. But I loved every minute of it and would do it again in a heartbeat. Which I will have to do because this is just stage one of the renovations and involved the kitchen, lounge and master bedroom.
Next week I will show you the lounge makeover and then a week later the bedroom. We will start the second stage after Christmas.

This is lovely! I had fun looking through the photos and at first I thought I liked the old kitchen; but then I saw how you had fixed things up so well! I love that long counter! You will be able to do so much cooking on it. In fact, I think the next time you do a video or share a photo, it should be you working at the counter. ๐ The windows are brilliant! What a great idea to have so many since you have such stunning views. ๐
I am glad you were the general contractor. ๐ It’s just perfect for you since you are so organized.
Congratulations on a job well done!
Thanks, Shala. The old kitchen wasn’t hideous but had no functionality or bench space. I have already done my first video in the kitchen. You can see it here: https://www.strandsofmylife.com/how-i-prepare-a-low-fodmap-snack/
Suzanne, your new kitchen looks so fresh and modern! I like how you have kept it simple but still pretty. I would like to have a table in my kitchen just like the one you have but it is not in our budget to get a new one. Thank you for sharing this video with us.
Thanks, Joyce. We managed to find that table at half price because it had been used for display. I am very happy with it.
Oh it’s beautiful, Suzanne, no wonder you’re so thrilled with it. You have such a great eye for putting things together and the attention to detail makes it all come together so wonderfully. I love how much light you have and am coveting your floor tiles! We refitted our kitchen a few years ago (we’re really pleased with it, but don’t think I managed to relish the process of project managing it as much as you have!) but with younger kids in and out of the garden, I decided to go with a flooring that would be more forgiving of muddy footprints! If we ever do another kitchen, I’d definitely go for something like that, they’re so pretty.
We also got our first induction hob (rather than gas) at that point and totally agree about the merits of cleaning them – it gives such a nice, clean line as part of the work surfaces too.
If you enjoy cooking and sharing food (I know you do, and I definitely do too!), then having a kitchen you love and want to spend time in is such a fantastic thing – I’m delighted for you!
Thanks, Katrina. The tiles are delightful but do show the dirt much more than our past kitchen floor, which was travertine. I agree about suiting the floor to the stage of life and who walks in and out. Mind you, here there seems to be a fair bit of traffic too and it is the first room you enter through the front door. I will just have to clean it more often. Indeed, having a kitchen you love means that you want to spend more time in it.
